Dutton-Dunwich

A Friendly, Caring, Rural Community

The Municipality of Dutton-Dunwich lies on the northwest coast of Lake Erie and extends inland to the banks of the Thames River. A part of Elgin County, the municipality reached its current extent with the 1998 amalgamation of the Village of Dutton and the Township of Dunwich, and includes a number of hamlets like Wallacetown, Port Talbot, Largie, and Campbellton. It boasts attractions like the Stephen E. Pearce Provincial Park and the Duttona Beach Campground. Indigenous peoples have lived on these lands for thousands of years, living in harmony with the land. With the arrival of American Loyalists in the 1790s, this region, like much of southern Ontario, was surveyed and began to be settled by farmers primarily of British descent. The population slowly grew, and by the mid-19th Century many of these hamlets and the village of Dutton began to take shape, supporting vibrant rural communities. The region produced significant figures, like Ellis Wellwood Sifton, who won a posthumous Victoria Cross at the Battle of Vimy Ridge, and John Kenneth Galbraith, a hugely influential economist who was a close advisor to president John F Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. Today the rural atmosphere of the municipality has been retained, and there are a number of beautiful heritage buildings spread over the region that have been painstakingly preserved.

This project is a partnership with the Municipality of Dutton-Dunwich and the Elgin County Museum & Archives.

We respectfully acknowledge that the Municipality of Dutton-Dunwich is within the traditional territory of the Oneida, Munsee Delaware, Anishnabek, Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and Ojibway/Chippewa peoples. This territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.

A photo from the Sifton Family Photo Album showing a group of people with a pine tree cart in front of a home in Wallacetown. One of the family members, Ellis Wellwood Sifton, lived in Wallacetown and received a posthumous Victoria Cross during the First World War.
The citation for his Victoria Cross reads:
"For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. During the attack in enemy trenches Sjt. Sifton's company was held up by machine gun fire which inflicted many casualties. Having located the gun he charged it single-handed, killing all the crew. A small enemy party advanced down the trench, but he succeeded keeping these off till our men had gained the position. In carrying out this gallant act he was killed, but his conspicuous valour undoubtedly saved many lives and contributed largely to the success of the operation."

This is St. Peter's Anglican Church in Tyrconnell. The heritage plaque erected at the site by the Archaeological and Historic Sites Board of Ontario reads:
"A fine example of early Gothic Revival architecture, this Anglican church lies in the midst of the original 'Talbot Settlement.' The nave was erected by the congregation in 1827. The belfry and tower, added in 1845 to accommodate a bell donated by the Earl of Galloway, adhered to the original style. In 1849 Bishop John Strachan consecrated the church, and two years later the Reverend James Stewart became first resident priest of the parish. Charlotte Simcoe, a daughter of the province's first lieutenant-governor, gave St. Peter's a silver communion service in 1844. The nearby burying ground contains the graves of some of the area's earliest settlers, including that of Col. Thomas Talbot, founder of the 'Talbot Settlement'."
